19 Aug / San G from the Sea completed
San G from the Sea: 9 hrs 36 mins- likely FKT.
On August 7th, 2016, I completed the bike/run time trial from the ocean at Dana Point to the summit of Mt. San Gorgonio in 9:36:28. Total distance was 96.7 miles and total vertical ascent was 15,086ft. Although my current time is certainly much longer than I am capable of, I believe it stands as an FKT (fastest known time) -so I’m still reasonably happy with the result. Check out the #RideLife video that Giant put together for the event:
95 degrees of suffering.
My first attempt in July was unsupported and ended prematurely just outside of Perris after a rear tire flatted and I broke my only CO2 inflation device. My dad agreed to drive out from Colorado and follow me on the second attempt, but I started too late in the morning and suffered in 95 degree heat across the valley. I didn’t give my father very much direction beforehand- he did a great job- but I dropped him (twice) after a fast descent and we became separated- leaving me without water refills for nearly 2 hours in the heat. Despite losing an hour off the bike while cooling down and taking in fluids, I still managed to complete the course but with a very slow (for myself) finish time. I think I can shave off at least 1-1.5 hours or more in the future. Until then…be sure to visit the UltraHurt San G from the Sea Course Page for info, maps, details, guidelines, and the Full Strava Segment Leaderboard.
