My friend Alexei Bolotov…gone

Many events have transpired since my last dispatch, but the most important at hand is the death of my friend and climbing partner Alexei Bolotov yesterday. I feel that far more appropriate words can be written about Alexei than I am capable of right now- my fingers simply hover over the keyboard with tears and disbelief- but I will share with you some great memories of Alexei in the future. For now, sadness reigns in my heart over his loss, and my thoughts are with his wife, family, friends, and also with Denis Urubko.

I’ve asked my family to post a few pictures of us together, and you can find more images of Alexei in the Annapurna 2008 and Gasherbrum I 2010 image galleries on this website.

    A time to reflect and think about our own meeting with Jesus. Will he know me? It is the only chance I have.

    Hi Don,
    I am the interim pastor at your parent’s church. I follow your blog as well as your adventures. I am saddened by the death of your friend. I am sure it is a heartbreaking experience. A good skier friend of mine was killed a number of years ago skiing on Christmas Day. I still find it hard to believe that such an excellent skier could have lost his life on a ski slope.

    Please know I pray for your safety and for comfort in your loss.

    Don, I didn’t know what to write or even if I should. The air left my lungs when I checked your blog this morning. I am so very very sorry. I can say though that Alexei has a wonderful new friend to watch over him now, my brother Jake. You describe him the way I do my Jakers, my idol, my strength , my anchor and my best friend. It has been 15 years since he left to watch over me and I ask that now they both watch over you and keep you safe . My brother is the one always laughing so loud… And I am sure still eating. Come back safe Don.

    I was told many years ago the ways and transgressions of life are exceedingly difficult. My condolences. Alexei’s spirit will guide you the rest of the way.

    Don,

    Words are barely a comfort with such a loss. However, I think John Gillespie Magee, Jr.’s poem “High Flight” is so eloquently written, and gives me a bit of visualization for what you and Alexei have experienced together. May God comfort you and Alexei’s family, and give you peace with knowing he inspired so many.

    “Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth,
    And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
    Sunward I’ve climbed and joined the tumbling mirth of sun-split clouds –
    and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of –
    wheeled and soared and swung high in the sunlit silence.
    Hovering there I’ve chased the shouting wind along
    and flung my eager craft through footless halls of air.

    “Up, up the long delirious burning blue
    I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace,
    where never lark, or even eagle, flew;
    and, while with silent, lifting mind I’ve trod
    the high untrespassed sanctity of space,
    put out my hand and touched the face of God.”

    Hi Don:
    I watched a video of you and Alexei joking-around at a high-altitude camp. It’s easy to see why you’ll miss him. Be safe…

    Today I saw (in Spain) the documentary about the rescue attempt of Iñaki Ochoa. When looking for information on the Internet I find the news of the death of Alexei. It makes me sad that a good man is gone.
