About Don

I train hard, I climb hard, I ride hard, I have an abysmal diet with a pension for children’s sugar-cereal. I was born and raised in Canada, so please feel free to send me real Smarties and Old Dutch Potato Chips. Most of the time I live in “Harvey-the-RV”Harvey the RV, my 1978 Foretravel 34ft motorhome, which is usually parked around the open spaces of Bishop, California- or in J&T’s backyard. Since childhood I’ve always felt most alive in the mountains, experiencing the sense of remoteness, and breathing in the unknown qualities of adventure. After crashing out of a San Fransisco tech startup in 2001, I moved to the mountains- and for the past 15 years have focused on climbing expeditions to Nepal, Tibet, Pakistan, South America, Canada, USA, and beyond. In fall 2013 Swiss alpinist Ueli Steck and I attempted our fourth 8000-meter peak together- my 16th Himalayan expedition. In 2007 I climbed the notoriously difficult K2 without supplemental O2, and summited Gasherbrum I in the same style with the late Alexey Bolotov in 2010. In 2012 I started road biking and have since become addicted to ultra-distance duathlons covering the most vertical distance possible in 24hrs. I call the new project- Ultra Hurt.
